World Cup-winning former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh threw his weight behind Mohammed Shami after the India pacer received online abuse after India’s defeat to Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2021 opener on Sunday in Dubai. Yuvraj said he will stand by Shami and Team India and urged Virat Kohli’s men to continue fighting hard after the early setback in the World Cup.
Shami was subjected to online abuse as trolls singled him out and targeted him for India’s 10-wicket loss to Pakistan. Shami had an off day as he gave away 44 runs in 3.5 overs. India posted a par total of 151 in 20 overs but Pakistan gunned the total down without losing a wicket and with 13 balls to spare.
Shami’s Instagram feed was filled with vile comments on Sunday after the pacer gave away 17 runs in his final over. However, fans backed Shami and his teammates and former cricketers took to social media to condemn the abuse. Pakistan wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan too took to social media and remained fans that sport should unite and not create divide between people.
“We all have tough days on the field but one bad day cannot define you as a sportsman! Proud of all that you have achieved for the country! I stand by @MdShami11 and team India. Keep working hard boys and never give up no matter what!” Yuvraj said in a Tweet.

Shami has been a key part of India’s pace-bowling renaissance. Along with Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav, Shami has had a successful stint both with the white-ball and the red-ball.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India sent a message on social media in support of Shami on Tuesday, urging the star pacer to continue doing the good work for India.
Notably, a fan shared a throwback video of Shami standing up to a fan who was trying to bully the Indian players after their defeat to Pakistan in the final of Champions Trophy 2017.
In a video clip that went viral after India’s disappointing day in Oval, London, Shami can be getting miffed by a fan who was targeting the Indian players as they were walking back to the dressing room. Shami lost his cool when the fan kept repeating “Baap kaun hai?”.
Having lost their opener to Pakistan, India will play New Zealand in a crucial Super 12 match on Sunday in Dubai. Kane Williamson’s side will also head into the contest on the back of a defeat as they were outclassed by Pakistan on Tuesday.
